Open Airways for SchoolsOpen Airways For Schools

Despite advances in asthma medication, asthma continues to present a serious threat to Colorado's children simply because many children do not receive a complete education in how to manage asthma effectively. Open Airways for Schools is the American Lung Association's six-session school-based program to teach children, ages 8 to 11, the essentials of asthma management.

Open Airways for Schools was honored with a Health Education Research Award from the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program. Children who participate in Open Airways for Schools:
  • Have fewer and less severe asthma episodes
  • Improve academic performance
  • Have more confidence in their ability to manage their asthma
  • Exert greater influence on their parents' asthma management decisions

Open Airway's interactive approach uses group decision activities, stories, games, and role-playing to promote children's active involvement in the learning process. For more information, contact asthma@lungcolorado.org.
